A New Year in Japan
On January 1, 1990, I was in Okayama, Japan. 21 years old with less than 2 months remaining on my two year mission.
I wrote this note to myself that New Year's Day in my journal:
Shiraki,
It's all up to you. The finish here begins an eternity of possibilities.
To end in strength is to start with power.
Sprint. Focus. Feel no pain.
More than twenty years have past since then. I find myself transformed from Mormon missionary to Honor Box chiropractor. And a husband, a father. I look back at 2010 and see the failed political campaign, the financial struggles... all the losses and all the triumphs.
I look back to 1990 and see that "Elder Shiraki". Then and now apart, I stand so very different, yet somehow exactly the same.
