Old Age and Retirement
We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden. -- Goethe
They say age is just a number. Getting old physically and mentally may have less to do with the chronological passing of the years than we have come to think.
Some keys to staying young:
- Approach the mysteries of life with a childlike curiosity
- Never stop learning new things
- Continue to contribute time, talents, and resources to build up the happiness of others
- Find things to smile and laugh about every day
- Be flexible
A patient asked me the other day when I thought I would retire. I told him that on the day I die, I hope to be still adjusting spines.
I've seen how retirement can actually "harden" a person. The keys to staying young are turned in along with the keys to the company they worked for. What should be the golden years of rest and comfort can easily transform into a life of complacency and self-centeredness.
As Malcolm Forbes once said, "Retirement kills more people than hard work ever did."
