Headaches
Thousands and thousands of people everyday in Hawaii suffer from headaches - killer headaches that stop us from getting all our work done, killer headaches that stop us from enjoying the precious time with family and friends.
What causes headaches in the first place?
From a chiropractic perspective, many headaches originate in the upper two vertebrae of the spine. The uppermost vertebra in the spine is called the atlas, or referred to as C-1. The second vertebra, or C-2 ("C" in reference to the term cervical--meaning "neck"), is called the axis.
Due to traumatic injuries that do not heal right, such as a whiplash injury in a car accident, or poor postural habits, or other factors like stress, the atlas and the axis can shift out of alignment forming a serious vertebral subluxation.
A subluxation of the atlas and axis may trigger a complex of problems involving the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Even a misalignment of a few milimeters can place enough stress on sensitive nerve tissue that may cause a pain syndrome to develop.
When I examine my patients who suffer from bad headaches, I have found that the majority of them - nearly every single of them, in fact - have a subluxation in the atlas and/or axis. The only way to fix this subluxation is with a chiropractic adjustment. Medicine will not align the subluxation, neither will a massage nor will physical therapy.
This is why I am greatly concerned with the thousands of people in Hawaii who swallow pills every day, day in and day out, to deal with their headaches. Painkillers do not fix the cause of the problem! When the cause of this painful problem does not get properly diagnosed, the unwanted effects of this subluxation persist on and on, sometimes for weeks, sometimes for months and sometimes, even for years.
The problem with using medications to deal with chronic headaches is the harmful side effects that go along with taking a drug over and over and over again, whether the drug be prescription or over-the-counter. Heavy use of any medication can cause damage to the kidneys, liver and digestive organs.
So if you or someone you love is plagued with killer headaches, consider an assessment of the atlas and axis. This can only be effectively done by a chiropractor. This is not to say that the only cause of headaches is a cervical subluxation. Headaches can also be a symptom of extremely dangerous conditions. However, these cases are very rare. After all possible dangerous health conditions have been ruled out, conditions like a brain tumor or meningitis, if the headaches persist without a solid medical diagnosis explaning its origin, then it is my strong recommendation to get the spine checked.
A chiropractic adjustment will realign the subluxated vertebrae. Eliminate the cause and the effect ceases.
Restore the proper alignment of the atlas and axis and the headache stops.
