After the Car Accident

One of the most stressful aspects of modern living is dealing with the problems that arise after an auto accident. After the accident, the victim is faced with many important questions. Questions like: Who’s going to fix my car? How am I going to get around town while my car is in the shop? Who exactly is responsible for the damage? Is my insurance going to cover all expenses?

However, the single most important question should be: Am I really all right, free from injury?

It is possible to “feel fine” after an accident but still have extensive damage done to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints of the neck and/or mid to low back. It is not uncommon for symptoms to surface days, maybe weeks, and in some cases, even months AFTER the accident.

When symptoms surface much later after the car accident, usually the insurance claim has already been settled. Then, at this point, it becomes very difficult to apply the benefits of the No-Fault coverage.

Anyone who is a victim of a car accident should immediately be checked out by a chiropractor. Even if the car accident victim is not in pain, a chiropractor can detect any asymptomatic injuries and recommend a course of care before the pain starts!

A common mistake that many people make is to correlate the damage of the car with damage to the spine. In other words, most people think that if the car only sustained minor damage, there probably isn’t any significant injury to the driver or passengers. Do not believe this! The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the damaging force applied to the cervical spine of the occupants.

The best thing about getting checked for injuries after a car accident, besides the fact that it can prevent years of pain and spinal degeneration, is that no-fault insurance covers the entire cost of chiropractic care— which includes the spinal exam, all x-rays, 30 adjustments and all adjunct therapies. This is one of the main reasons why we pay for car insurance!

When you decide to get chiropractic care for your car accident injuries, please remember: 1) You do NOT need a referral from a medical doctor; and 2) Your premiums do not automatically go up if you start chiropractic care under your insurance benefits!

One more thing I learned today, thanks Reed. It's just too bad I'd have to actually be in a car accident to get full coverage for chiropractic care!
Medical Insurance need to step up their game and be smart in covering Chiropractors, instead of Physicians that just pass along the next best medicine that MIGHT help. *sigh, here I go.

Being in a car accident is really a serious deal. But the worse is the after-effect where you will remember the horrifying moments and feel the pain, physically and psychologically. But everything will come to pass with the help people around you, especially your doctors!
